How to Install Exchange 2013 on server 2012 R2

This guide will show you what to do before implementing Exchange 2013 on server 2012 in simple steps

First Keep in mind that,

Exchange Server 2013 can be installed on Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2, either Standard or datacenter edition.

In exchange server 2013 SP1 Microsoft has introduced edge transport server role which was missing in earlier version.

Exchange Server 2013 can be installed either as,

Mailbox server role or combined Mailbox and Client Access server roles.

Client Access server role.

Confirm that exchange server meets following requirements,

Exchange server must be a member of a domain

Forest functional level at least should be Windows Server 2003

Follow the steps below to prepare the exchange server installation

Run Windows PowerShell as Administrator and Paste the following to Install Windows Features

Install-WindowsFeature RSAT-ADDS

Run Windows PowerShell as Administrator and Paste the following :

Install-WindowsFeature AS-HTTP-Activation, Desktop-Experience, NET-Framework-45-Features, RPC-over-HTTP-proxy, RSAT-Clustering, RSAT-Clustering-CmdInterface, RSAT-Clustering-Mgmt, RSAT-Clustering-PowerShell, Web-Mgmt-Console, WAS-Process-Model, Web-Asp-Net45, Web-Basic-Auth, Web-Client-Auth, Web-Digest-Auth, Web-Dir-Browsing, Web-Dyn-Compression, Web-Http-Errors, Web-Http-Logging, Web-Http-Redirect, Web-Http-Tracing, Web-ISAPI-Ext, Web-ISAPI-Filter, Web-Lgcy-Mgmt-Console, Web-Metabase, Web-Mgmt-Console, Web-Mgmt-Service, Web-Net-Ext45, Web-Request-Monitor, Web-Server, Web-Stat-Compression, Web-Static-Content, Web-Windows-Auth, Web-WMI, Windows-Identity-Foundation, RSAT-ADDS

Install Microsoft Unified Communications Managed API 4.0, Core Runtime 64-bit

If you find error stating Media Foundation feature is missing run following powershell command

Install-WindowsFeature Server-Media-Foundation

Install Microsoft Office 2010 Filter Packs 64 bit.

Install Microsoft Office 2010 Filter Packs SP1 64 bit.

Server is ready for exchange 2013 installation

Open up Windows powershell as administrator and insert these commands to add the necessary features and roles to install exchange 2013

Import-Module ServerManager

Pre-requisites list

When installing exchange 2013 mailbox and client access server on windows server 2008 R2 check for these pre-requisites list   

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 RC (I recommend downloading the standalone  redistributable installer)

Windows Management Framework 3.0

Microsoft Unified Communications Managed API 4.0, Core Runtime 64-bit

Microsoft Office 2010 Filter Pack 64 bit

Microsoft Office 2010 Filter Pack SP1 64 bit

Microsoft Knowledge Base article KB974405 (Windows Identity Foundation)

Knowledge Base article KB2619234 (Enable the Association Cookie/GUID that is used by RPC over HTTP to also be used at the RPC layer in Windows 7 and in Windows Server 2008 R2)

Uninstall Microsoft Visual C++ Beta Redistributable

Before installing exchange 2013 make sure to uninstall Microsoft Visual C++ 11 Beta Redistributable (x64). To do that go to

Control Panel > Programs and Features. Select Visual C++ 11 Beta Redistributable (x64) – 11.0.50531
